The 3km bypass, located on State Road SS28 “del Colle di Nava,” is intended to improve links between the A6 Turin-Savona Highway and the valleys in the Cuneo area.
A key element of the project is the 240m-long Ellero viaduct. It will be equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) sensors to monitor the bridge’s structural integrity.
The sensors will supply real-time data on deck stability and the hydrogeological status of the watercourse below.
The works also include the construction of the San Lorenzo tunnel, which is 1.4km long. The tunnel aims to divert heavy vehicle traffic from the Borgato district, facilitating quicker connections to the Turin-Savona highway.
The project is expected to create around 150 direct and indirect jobs during construction.
Site operations will rely on digital sensor networks to optimise water and energy use, with mobile barriers set up to manage dust levels.
Water will be recovered and reused under a circular-economy model to reduce environmental impact.
Temporary crossings for wildlife, as well as visual and acoustic deterrents, are planned to limit disruption to local fauna during building work.
Cossi Costruzioni specialises in complex projects involving tunnels, viaducts and infrastructure in difficult geological settings, with experience spanning nearly five decades.
The company’s previous work includes restoration of the Mont Blanc Tunnel and participation in highway and railway projects across Italy and Switzerland, such as the Monte Ceneri Base Tunnel.
Since joining the Webuild Group in 2022, Cossi Costruzioni has brought its expertise to major projects, including the Genoa San Giorgio Bridge, the Terzo Valico dei Giovi, and high-speed rail links such as Verona-Vicenza and Salerno-Reggio Calabria.
Webuild stated: “This new contract reinforces the effectiveness of Webuild’s business model, which enhances the expertise of its fully integrated subsidiaries.”
