The rehabilitation of Alexandria’s Raml Tram, a key component of Egypt’s sustainable transportation initiatives, has reached a significant milestone with the signing of the infrastructure works contract.
This development aligns with Arab Republic of Egypt president Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s directives to establish a network of green, environmentally friendly mass transportation systems.
The contract, which marks a step forward in the Ministry of Transportation’s plan to implement such transportation projects in Alexandria, was signed by the National Authority for Tunnels and the joint venture (JV) of Arab Contractors and Hassan Allam.
The signing was witnessed by lieutenant general engineer Kamel El Wazir, deputy prime minister for Industrial Development and minister of Industry and Transport.
Dr. Tarek Goueili, chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels, engineer El Sayed Al Wazir, vice chairman of the Arab Contractors Company, and Hassan Allam, chairman of Hassan Allam Company, inked the agreement.
The event was attended by key figures including engineer Hassan Ibrahim, engineer Ahmed Shawky, engineer Sherif Tarek, and engineer Alia Abdel Azim from the Arab Contractors Company.

By GlobalDataThe deputy prime minister reiterated the project’s alignment with the Ministry of Transport’s broader transportation strategy for Alexandria.
The two national Egyptian companies undertaking the project will extend the tram’s length to 13.2 km, encompassing 24 stations with various segments including 5.7km above ground, 7.3km elevated, and 276m underground.
Upon completion, the tram will connect key areas from Victoria Station to Raml, integrating with the Alexandria Metro at Victoria and Sidi Gaber stations.
The upgrade is expected to slash travel times from 60 to 35 minutes by increasing operating speeds and reducing headway times from nine minutes to three minutes, significantly boosting passenger capacity from 4700 passengers per hour in one direction to 13,800.
In June 2024, a contract with Hyundai Rotem from Korea was also signed for the manufacture and supply of 30 tram units for the metro project. This agreement follows another to localise and supply 21 metro train units for the Alexandria Metro project’s first phase, currently under construction.
