Patriots Point Development Authority (PPDA) has signed an agreement with the US Congressional Medal of Honor Society to construct a $100m museum on Charleston Harbor in South Carolina, honouring those who have received the highest award for valour.
The National Medal of Honor Museum will be built on 10-12 acres of land, replacing a smaller museum currently operating on board an aircraft carrier.
The museum will feature a new hotel with amenities and a conference centre.
PPDA Chairman Ray Chandler said that the project is expected to serve as a catalyst for additional investments at Patriots Point.
"This will include both cultural and appropriate commercial and hospitality uses of the highest quality," Chandler said.
The master plan includes a uniform collection space, a large theatre with multiple video screens, an interactive media gallery, which will allow visitors to listen to the award recipient’s story, and a Great Hall in honour of awardees.

By GlobalDataAfter completion, the national museum will be situated along a waterfront area at the entrance to Patriots Point and will serve as the anchor for future development on additional PPDA properties.
The National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation will hold a lease from PPDA for the site and will be responsible for raising funds to design, build and operate the museum.
The museum is expected to attract over 200,000 visitors per year by the third year of its operation.
In June 2012, PPDA had awarded a contract to Musaic Design Group to develop a Museum Experience Master Plan for the USS Yorktown.
