UK-based Townscape has supplied its new hostile vehicle mitigation security system, PAS 68 Counter Terror (CT) Blocks, to Saudi Arabia’s newly developed King Abdullah Sports City, with the aim of safeguarding the facility from vehicle borne terrorist attacks.

Weighing 2.2t each, the blocks are manufactured using a special mix of durable materials at Townscape’s Sutton-in-Ashfield factory.

Under a £1.2m contract, Townscape deployed 600 CT Blocks within the sport city, which is known as ‘the jewel in the desert’.

The company consulted with Saudi Arabia-based contractors, including MSIX, Samsung SDS and Light Weight Building for installing the blocks at the venue.

Officially opened in May, the 60,000-seat sports facility is located 60km from Jeddah and cost about $507m.

"The prestigious PAS 68 mark was a vital requirement specified by the owners to ensure the highest level of perimeter security was achieved."

The venue houses a 2,000-seat multi-purpose indoor stadium, a 1,000-seat athletics pitch, a Mosque, hotels and a sports hospital.

The facility has been built according to FIFA standards and will also serve as a home for Saudi Arabia’s two premier league football clubs.

Townscape managing director Jonathan Goss said: "The King Abdullah Sports City is one of the most exciting developments in the Middle East, which will attract thousands of visitors each year.

"It’s a world-class attraction which requires world-class perimeter protection.

"The Townscape CT Block was the ideal solution, the 100mm low-profile foundation is suited to the local terrain and the prestigious PAS 68 mark was a vital requirement specified by the owners to ensure the highest level of perimeter security was achieved."
