Russian natural gas company Gazprom has secured planning permission for the construction of the first phase of a $2.7bn social and business district named Lakhta Center in Saint Petersburg.
The first phase of the project will feature a 462.7m tower and adjacent stylobate, as well as five other buildings.

The project involves construction of an office centre, a scientific and educational complex, sports facilities, a medical centre, a children’s technology park, an observation platform, exhibition areas and a multi-use hall.
Lakhta Center will also house shops, restaurants, cafes, banks and ice rinks, while a water facing outdoor amphitheatre will be built to host city festivals and water shows.
One third of the Lakhta Center will be occupied by a park which will be linked with the Park of the 300th Anniversary to a promenade through a pedestrian bridge,
An exhibition hall has also been included in the design.

By GlobalDataThe project has been discussed in St. Petersburg for several years and the company originally planned to construct it in the Krasnogvardeisky district of St. Petersburg on the bank of the Okhta River away from the historic centre.
Stage one was planned as the build of a 396m tower designed by the UK-based architectural firm RMJM but the location of the skyscraper caused controversy among St. Petersburg residents.
Lakhta Center will be located on the north-western end of the Saint Petersburg city near the Gulf of Finland.
The new centre will be based on the previous architectural design planned to be constructed on Okhta promontory in the Krasnogvardeysky district.
In 2008, construction company Arabtec secured a contract to build the centre, which is scheduled to be complete by 2018.
