The project has been discussed in St. Petersburg for several years and the company originally planned to construct it in the Krasnogvardeisky district of St. Petersburg on the bank of the Okhta River away from the historic centre.

Stage one was planned as the build of a 396m tower designed by the UK-based architectural firm RMJM but the location of the skyscraper caused controversy among St. Petersburg residents.

Lakhta Center will be located on the north-western end of the Saint Petersburg city near the Gulf of Finland.

The new centre will be based on the previous architectural design planned to be constructed on Okhta promontory in the Krasnogvardeysky district.

In 2008, construction company Arabtec secured a contract to build the centre, which is scheduled to be complete by 2018.
