Engineering and design consultancy Atkins has been selected by developer HuaRong Real Estate to design the Huarong Hengqin Tower in Zhuhai, China.

The mixed-use development will include a five-star hotel, international grade-A offices and retail facilities in a prime location facing the waterfront about 300m from the tourism project Cotai strip in Macau.

Atkins design director Ian Milne said: "The towers are orientated to provide hotel guests and office users with stunning views of significant landmarks in the area, while respecting the development potential and view corridors of adjacent sites."

The orientation of the building protects its main entrances from wind, while the front part of the building will consist of louvers, which prevent unwanted glare and accentuate the concept of a rippling water surface.

Huarong Hengqin Tower will be one of the first buildings to be built as part of the larger plan in the development of the new economic zone of Hengqin Island District.

Atkins’ other projects in the region include the Lotus Hotel near Shanghai, Intercontinental Hotel for Shimao in Songjiang, ongoing design work for an Alila Resort Complex in Li Shui, and recent hotel commissions for the developers Huarong and Donglord.

Earlier this month, work commenced on the company-designed Pacific Dream Plaza in Qingdao in northern China, a 300,000m² river-side mixed-use development, which includes a 30-storey hotel tower, 1,500 residential units as well as office and retail space.
