Australia’s first-ever ice sports and entertainment venue, The Icehouse has opened to the public.
The A$58m ($51.3m) venue is located at Waterfront City in Melbourne’s Docklands and features two Olympic-sized ice skating rinks, a winter sports gym, stadium seating, a sports medicine clinic, a cafe and a bar.
Global architecture practice Arup has designed the venue, which achieved the Docklands Award of Excellence for Sustainability, according to worldinteriordesignnetwork.com.
The scheme also houses Australia’s Olympic Winter Institute.
The 9,500m² scheme uses 40% less energy, with sustainable design elements that include rainwater collection, reuse of heat from the cooling system and high-performance insulation around all four sides and the roof.
Arup began work on the project in 2003 by conducting feasibility studies; the project received approval in 2008, construction began on 22 December 2008 and was completed on 12 February 2010.
