International practice Foreign Office Architects (FOA) has received approval for the redevelopment of Birmingham New Street railway station’s gateway scheme from the local council.

Improved railway links in and out Birmingham will be provided under the £600m ($932m) redevelopment, which is part of a £2.3bn ($3.57bn) stimulus package to resuscitate the local economy.

Redevelopment will involve the construction of a new concourse which is three-and-a-half times larger than the existing one and is expected to double passenger numbers at the station.

Preparatory work for the concourse has been underway since September 2009 and is scheduled for completion in 2012, architectsjournal.co.uk reports.

The second phase of the work, which will involve the redevelopment of the existing concourse, is expected to be complete in 2015.

The project gained the backing of Network Rail, Birmingham City Council, Advantage West Midlands, Centro and the Department for Transport and will be delivered by Network Rail.
