UK-based architecture and engineering firm BDP has been selected by the University of London to design a masterplan for Senate House and its environs.
The designs for surrounding areas will include buildings and spaces, which lends historic character to the area. Renovation at the site is expected to revitalise and establish the iconic building as an academic hub for the university and its colleges.
BDP director of architecture Chris Harding said: "This is a major win for BDP’s London studio.
"The primary goal of the masterplan will be to unlock the innate potential of this important part of central London and create a cohesive and stimulating identity for a world leading university, one of the oldest, largest and most diverse in the UK.
"There will be a high level of interest in the project and we are really looking forward to working with the wide range of stakeholders who will be involved in the process."
University of London Property and Facilities Management director Paul Wilkinson said: "BDP has a tremendous track record in delivering successful masterplans in the university sector and as such will be instrumental in ensuring that the University of London realises the fundamental aims and objectives of the project in providing a world-class university environment in London’s Knowledge Quarter.
"Moreover, the masterplan will set the vision and strategic framework to guide future development of the University of London for the next ten to 20 years."
The architecture firm will be co-ordinating with key stakeholders for the plans and also work closely with the University Estates team for the proposed renovation.
