South East Regional Hospital in Australia

Australian contractor Brookfield Multiplex has received a contract to build the new $171.6m South East Regional Hospital at Bega Valley.

The new hospital is planned to be built on a 17.5ha greenfield site and will offer a wider range medical services to Bega Valley and the broader community.

New South Wales health minister Jillian Skinner said this milestone demonstrates that the construction of the South East Regional Hospital is well underway.

"The development on this hospital will change the way healthcare is delivered to residents of the Bega Valley and surrounding districts," Skinner said.

"The development on this hospital will change the way healthcare is delivered to residents of the Bega Valley and surrounding districts."

"The NSW Government is committed to ensuring our rural and regional communities have access to modern quality health care closer to home."

Out of the total cost, about $160.1m will be provided through the Australian Government’s health and hospitals fund (HHF) and $10m will be contributed by the NSW Government.

The scheme is claimed to be the largest infrastructure project to be undertaken in the Bega Valley Shire. Construction on the hospital is scheduled to commence next month, with completion anticipated for early 2016.

The new South East Regional Hospital will offer extensive community and ambulatory services, community mental health care, drug and alcohol services and inpatient services.

Project works will include the construction of an emergency medical unit with 15 department bays, four emergency medical unit beds and intensive care facilities, while high-dependency and cardiac patients would be added to a single integrated critical care unit.

Brookfield will build three operating theatres, a procedure room, expanded acute medical and surgical areas, and an inpatient sub-acute care unit. Maternity and pediatrics services will also be expanded and four acute bays, four ambulatory bays and two emergency bays will be added to the paediatric unit.

The hospital will have about 500 parking spaces and a helipad space.

The latest contract award follows Brookfield Multiplex’s completion of health projects at New South Wales, including the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Sydney and the Clinical Services Building at the Royal North Shore hospital.
