UK architecture company Foster + Partners has announced plans to convert a former golf course into a mixed-use site at Silicon Valley, California, US.

Developer Related Companies appointed the firm to transform the 9.2ft² municipal golf course.

The mixed-use site at Santa Clara will feature residential towers, office buildings and a park.

Claimed to be Silicon Valley’s first mixed-use development, it will consist of low-rise and high-rise buildings comprising offices, shops and residences.

This new neighbourhood layout will feature shaded streets and huge park.

Foster + Partners was quoted by media reports as saying: “Silicon Valley has always been underpinned by a pioneering spirit of innovation and a desire to make the world a better place.

“Our aspiration is to push the boundaries of design and construction and introduce a model of sustainable urbanism in the valley centred on people.

The project is funded as a public-private partnership between the City of Santa Clara and Related Companies.

Besides providing 25,000 jobs, the project is expected to rejuvenate the former golf course in the city.

This 9.2 million square feet neighbourhood will feature 5.4 million square feet of new commercial office space. The site will feature 1,280 new residential apartments, 400 extended-stay apartments, one million square feet of shopping, dining and entertainment spaces, as well as a 440-room business hotel.

Serving as the lead design architect for the first phase of the site development, Foster + Partners will collaborate with Gensler, which serves as executive architect for the total project.

WSP USA will serve as the lead engineering firm.
