The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is set to release strategies and 3D models for retail stores and office spaces to help businesses to reopen safely during the Covid-19 pandemic.

As part of the AIA’s ‘Reopening America: Strategies for Safer Buildings’ initiative, a team comprising architects, public health experts, engineers, and facility managers have developed mitigation strategies.

The strategies are developed for buildings to reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission, promote social distancing standards, and improve wellbeing.

AIA said in a statement: “Design strategies provide a holistic approach to modifying stores and offices using a 17-point architectural, engineering and administrative framework based upon recent Covid-19 public health information.

“They also provide cost-effective options that can be implemented immediately and suggest design alternatives for creating more flexible spaces, enhancing social connectedness, and reinforcing healthy behaviours.”

Three new tools have been developed based on the outcomes from the team to protect the health and safety of the public.

The Risk Management Plan for Buildings methodology offers a comprehensive process for evaluating hazards in buildings and reducing risk. It can be applied during the pandemic and for all shocks and stresses to create resilient buildings.

The AIA Re-occupancy Assessment Tool (2.0) provides an improved framework of strategies for reopening or making buildings such as housing, offices, restaurants, retailers, senior living facilities, and schools safer.

COVID-19 ArchMap, the third tool developed by the team, allows architects to incorporate design strategies that mitigate the risk of Covid-19 for any building type to AIA’s map.

Produced in partnership with the University of Kansas’ Institute of Health + Wellness Design, this platform is aimed at facilitating design innovation.

Furthermore, tailored strategies and considerations are being developed by the team for schools and senior living facilities.
