Netherlands-based architectural practice West 8 has won a competition to design a riverside community called Veddel North in Hamburg, Germany.
The community will be located on the south bank of the Elbe River in the German city.
During the three month competition, architectural firms were asked to offer creative and practical design concepts to improve the spatial qualities of flood protection system along the river, as well as improve the residential and commercial areas located in northern side of Veddel.
West 8 said its design for the community addresses the current disconnect of the former Veddeler Market area, currently a highway exit, which suffers from traffic congestion and noise pollution.
The design focuses on its unique location on the river bank and proximity to Elbe bridges, which form an important entrance to Hamburg.
West 8’s design will also leverage the renovation of the lost Veddeler Market to build a multi-layered mixed use community.

By GlobalDataThe design aims to use the fragmented structure of the existing buildings as basic framework to develop the urban planning.
Part of the plan also includes development of Veddeler Dike Park, which will create natural park areas and landscaped lawn areas overlooking the Elbe River.
The proposed park will be developed at the end of the market place, which will be connected to the residential area with ramps and bridges to offer open spaces to the communities.
A viewing platform will be created at the height of the dike at the end of the ramp system.
The design will also try to bridge the gap between urban district and dike, helping separate the cycling and walking paths from the passenger car and heavy goods vehicles.
A series of bridges and pontoons will be created which will cyclists and pedestrians to pass through the rail bridge which will free up space along the Elbe River for residential traffic.
