The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) in the US is seeking architects to submit plans for the proposed expansion of the museum.
The $480m expansion scheme is expected to triple the building’s current gallery and public space, and is spurred on by the $250m it received in contributions towards the project.
An SFMOMA-appointed committee of museum and community leaders for the project will have director of research and planning at California College of the Arts David Meckel serving as an advisory resource.
The committee will choose architects based on their criteria to understand the needs of an art museum as a civic resource and a sustainable development.
The committee will evaluate all submissions before making its recommendation to the board of trustees, who in turn will make the decision in late 2010.
SFMOMA plans to add new facilities to enhance the visitor experience.
The museum has been working alongside Bain & Company, a management consulting firm since October to plan the expansion.
The building underwent its last expansion in 1995 when it relocated from the San Francisco War Memorial Building to its current location on Third Street.
