A contract to design an education centre on the Faroe Islands in Torshavn, Denmark has been awarded to a design consortium that beat five other finalists.
The consortium comprising BIG Architects, Fuglark, Lemming & Eriksson, Sámal Johannesen, Martin E Leo and KJ Elrad will design the 19,200m² education centre, which will house 1,200 students and 300 teachers.
The Faroe Islands Gymnasium, Torshavns Technical College and Business College of Faroe Islands will be combined into one building.
A stepped interior features alternating plateaus, stairwells and lobbies, while the central rotunda space and terraces will serve different social and academic activities.
The new development will serve as a base for coordination and future development of all educational programmes in the region.
