Designs for two new public spaces by Whitelaw Turkington and Arup at GreenGate in Central Salford, Manchester, UK, have been approved by the local council.

The planning application was submitted in March 2009.

The 13ha mixed-use development will feature a new public square with water fountains, beacon towers and a new bridge across the River Irwell.

The project is being built by Central Salford URC and Salford City Council in partnership with ASK Developments.

The development will link the scheme with the old Manchester Cathedral Quarter.

Work on the first phase of the project is expected to commence in 2010.

Greengate will house 2,500 residential blocks and over 85,000m² of commercial floor space. The area is expected to attract over £580m of private sector investment.
