Construction work has begun at the mixed-use Rotterdam Market Hall scheme in the Netherlands.

Designed by Rotterdam-based MVRDV, the €175m scheme will include public market space and apartment buildings.

The arched building is situated on an area of 100,000m², which will include 228 apartments, 100 market stalls, shops and restaurants, 1,200 parking spaces and an underground supermarket.

All the apartments will all have a balcony on the outside and a window to the inside of the market and be protected with insulation.

A suspended glass façade will cover the building’s 40m-tall opening in the front and back, while the market produce will be displayed in the interior of the arch.

The project, being developed by Provast, is expected to be complete in 2014.
