A new diagonal crossing at London’s Oxford Circus, designed by Atkins Global, has opened and increased pedestrian space by 70%.

The remodelled £5m diagonal crossing junction incorporates pedestrian and traffic modelling, and a streetscape design including new “desire lines”, which allow pedestrians to go directly to their destination.

It is estimated that more than 43,000 people and 2,000 vehicles pass by the junction every hour.

The remodelling involved the removal of existing balustrades, traffic signs and bins from the street, while 500m of pavement has been widened with new lighting added.

The scheme has been completed in 26 months and draws inspiration from the Shibuya crossing in Tokyo, Japan.
