Vienna practice Caramel Architects has completed construction of a new building that forms the first part of a science park at the Johannes Kepler University in Austria.
The €22m building block named ‘Mechatronik’ is the first of the five building’s commissioned for the science park, construction is yet to begin on the remaining four blocks.
The €80m-€100m science park is shaped like a square, Mechatronik forms the first corner of the square.
The central building will form the final phase of the project, which is expected to be complete by 2014.
The 160m steel-framed Mechatronik is shaped like a bridge and has curved structural lines to accommodate the sloping landscape.
The 14,000m² glazed central area has many open areas between rooms and the interior is marked by structural lines, featuring double-height spaces in an open layout.
