Britain’s English Heritage has submitted a proposal to build a £25m visitor centre at the famous tourist site of Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England.

Denton Corker Marshall will undertake the design and construction of the centre which has been approved in principle by the UK government.

The proposed site is located at Airmen’s Corner in Wiltshire and involves the closure of the nearby A344 road.

On securing permission, work is expected to start in 2011. The facility is scheduled to open by 2012, in time for the London Olympics.

In 2000, plans to build a £500m tunnel through the A303 road paved way for the visitor centre relocation, however the government scrapped the plan in 2007.
