Swedish sustainable experts from White Arkitekter have teamed up with UK firm Price & Myers to overhaul the world’s longest pier, Southend Pier in the UK, into a sustainable urban pier.
According to the new design, the pier will feature a street with restaurants, cafes and other destinations every 500m, forming an urban extension on the sea.
An outdoor theatre with a capacity to accommodate 500 people will be housed at the end of the pier.
All the new buildings on the pier will use technology including wind turbines and a sea water heat pump as well as incorporating natural ventilation to become self sufficient.
The design uses low-maintenance and long-lasting materials such as untreated timber, corten steel and glass.
