Sander Architects has released its design for the Indio Performing Arts Center in the mountainside just out of Los Angeles.

The building, commissioned by the Idyllwild Arts Academy, will be set alongside a green patio at the centre of the campus.

The building features a curved roof plane landscaped with drought-tolerant vegetation that extends to the ground.

The roof will be enclosed in rusted cor-ten panels and imprinted with images of flora.

The roof plane will be used for additional seating for concerts and will form an outdoor cinema / theatre viewing area.

The design is based on a hybrid construction concept that makes use of recycled light-gauge metal building components produced off-site with computer-controlled processes that help reduce the cost of construction.

Construction is scheduled to begin by mid 2010.
