British construction company Sir Robert McAlpine has won a £94m contract to build the indoor arena and velodrome for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

The National Indoor Sports Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome will be located on a 10.5ha site in the Glasgow’s East End.

The arena will accommodate 5,000 spectator seats for sport competitions, while the velodrome can hold a further 2,000 seated and 500 standing spectators.

The viewing capacity of the velodrome, which will host the badminton and track cycling events, is to be expanded to 4,000 seats during the Commonwealth Games.

Construction work is scheduled to begin towards the end of 2009 and completed by early 2012.The velodrome track is expected to be installed in Spring 2012.
