Construction firms Laing O’Rourke and Bam Construct are competing for a £400m contract to build a medical research facility centre in London.

The six-storey, 62,000m² building on a 3.6-acre site at Brill Place in Somers Town will accommodate the UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation (UKCMRI) for a consortium made up of The Medical Research Council, The Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and University College London.

The centre will comprise laboratories, a biological research facility, ancillary spaces, meeting and auditorium facilities and associated support areas to undertake research on common fatal diseases.

The construction of the medical research centre will be complete in two phases. The first phase of preconstruction services that enables early substructure work is expected to start in early 2010 while the main construction phase is likely to start in mid 2010.
