Contractors have been named for the runway of the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport designed by UK architects Foster + Partners.

The New Mexico Spaceport Authority said the construction of the 10,000ft runway will be carried out by New Mexico firm David Montoya Construction and site enabling will be done by FNF New Mexico.

The 10,000ft runway is designed to accommodate horizontal launch space and air operations to complement the existing vertical launch infrastructure.

Spaceport America plans to have the airfield complete by late summer 2010 with the Terminal Hangar Facility projected to be complete by early 2011.
