Architect practice Sheppard Robson, together with consultants Arup and Davis Langdon, will design and build a new airport city in Abuja, Nigeria.

The 18-year programme will create a strategic regeneration plan for the 77,000km² Niger State region, Minna.

The scheme will initially focus on creating a manufacturing hub around the refurbished airstrip and terminal buildings. It will then include rail links and housing.

Sheppard Robson creative director Tim Evans said that the company would fast-track the airport, which will be built in 18 to 24 months.

“A molar-shaped area of influence will develop over the next six years and this will grow to 7,000km² within 12 years,” he added.
