More than 150 architects have responded to a competition to design a building at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA), falling below the numbers initially predicted.

The brief to design the £50m building was downloaded over 11,000 times from the website of competition organiser Malcolm Reading.

In total 150 entries were received, 58 of which came from outside the UK. Entries included architects previously listed for the Stirling Prize and three Pritzker Prize laureates.

Up to seven firms will be shortlisted for the GSA building, which will be located opposite Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s main building, on 22 May 2009. A winner will be announced in September.
