A faulty computer system has caused huge losses and disruption at the Royal Free London Hospital in London, the first hospital to have installed the software.
The hospital has lost £7.2m with patients forced to wait up to four months for appointments, according to an investigation by The Evening Standard newspaper.
An internal trust report seen by the Standard reveals a loss of £3.8m caused by staff entering information on the system incorrectly.
A further £1.2m was spent on bringing in extra staff to sort out the problems, said the newspaper.
As a result the hospital has not paid for some of the operations and appointments carried out.
A spokesperson for the hospital said the [NHS] trust has lost the money due to the implementation of the Care Records Service (Cerner) system. It has yet to decide whether it will seek compensation.
The Royal Free is the only trust to have installed the ‘London Configuration 1’ software which links to the NHS system that stores patient information.
