The head of a top architecture firm is calling on the profession to drop its ‘old boys’ club’ image by creating opportunities for women and people from black and ethnic minority backgrounds.

CEO at RMJM Peter MORRISON, who heads world’s eighth-biggest practice, will call upon his colleagues tonight as he announces a package of support worth £1m for the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust.

According to Morrison, the UK needs to recruit as many architects as possible to combat a future global shortage.

Figures from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, (OECD) support his claim, suggesting world investment in building and infrastructure is expected to exceed £53,000bn in the next two decades.

Speaking to the audience at the Stephen Lawrence Memorial Lecture – alongside acclaimed British designer Wayne Hemingway – Morrison will tell the audience of 400 people involved in the industry that the profession is “not inclusive, it simply does not accurately reflect society in Britain today – as an industry we’re remarkably short on designers from black and ethnic minority backgrounds.”

Morrison, who says the profession reminds him of an ‘old boys’ club’ is supported by figures from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) which reveals that only 2% of practicing architects in the UK are from black and ethnic minority backgrounds.
