Dubai’s yellow desert will receive a green focus next year thanks to new rules that enforce environmentally friendly building standards across the United Arab Emirates (UEA) city.

Exactly what the government will endorse as its “green” approach when it brings the principles into effect in January next year is unknown, although it says efforts will be underway “immediately” to see benchmarks drawn up.

The announcement comes as Dubai opens its first platinum green building, accredited by the US Green Building Councils LEED rating system – the headquarters of automation solutions provider Pacific Control Systems.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Ruler of the UAE, says a new focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly developments will help show Dubai’s support for the rest of the world’s efforts on climate change.

Dubai is the first city in the Middle East to adopt green building standards.
