British architect firm Llewellyn Davies Yeang and engineer Paul Frischmann will help create a masterplan for the war-torn holy city of Najaf in Iraq, in what will be the largest role Britain has played in the nation’s redevelopment.
Working with local consultants, the firms will devise a comprehensive plan for the entire urban area and design in accordance with predicted urban growth and development areas.
They will also work to highlight the religious importance of the area – enhancing the holy Muslim shrine in the city, showing consideration for the millions of pilgrams that visit each year.
A careful study will also be undertaken to set up a GIS data system for the area while new digital mapping will help with ongoing management of town planning and development.
