The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has announced the completion of two 6km power tunnels under the Olympic Park, marking the building of the first Olympic construction project.
Construction work began last April to create tunnels capable of carrying the power required for the Games as well as the legacy site, which will replace the large number of pylons, which will be dismantled towards the end of next year. It paves the way for the main venues and infrastructure in 2008. “Burying the power lines underground is essential in unlocking the Olympic Park site for the start of construction next year and is a vital part of the long term regeneration of East London,” said ODA chief executive David Higgins.

“This not only marks the completion of one of our first major projects, on time and on budget, but also the beginning of the transformation of East London,” said Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone. “The area will benefit from new affordable homes delivered on a scale never seen before in the capital as well as thousands of new jobs that will come as we continue to regenerate the Lower Lea Valley in the coming decade.”
Four 40t tunnel boring machines used during the construction unearth 200,000m³ of spoil, which will be reused in the construction of the Olympic Park. The tunnels will now be filled with over 200km of electrical cables.
