Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) in the US has unveiled plans to construct a new 68,000ft² building, designed by the architecture firm CO|FXFOWLE.
Planned to be constructed on the existing Columbia property at the corner of W.168th Street and Audubon Avenue, at the east end of the CUMC campus, the new seven-storey building will serve as a new home for the Columbia University School of Nursing.
The building’s proposed interior will feature 65% more space than the school’s current location and will feature a network of advanced spaces that house several styles of teaching and learning, as well as places for socialising and relaxation.
The building will also feature a simulation centre, which will occupy nearly two floors, spaces for research, a sunlit atrium lobby, a café and an event space on the top floor adjacent to a rooftop terrace.
The simulation centre will be equipped with several model health-care settings such as a mock in-patient room, exam room, critical care unit and an operating room.
Plans also include development of three clinical teaching skills labs, which will feature a total of six beds and 14 exam tables.

Columbia’s president, Lee Bollinger, said: "This new state-of-the-art facility for the school is another in a series of important steps forward not only for Columbia University Medical Center’s home campus in Washington Heights, but also for the university as a whole, as well as for our neighbours in northern Manhattan."
Apart from the Columbia University School of Nursing and College of Physicians & Surgeons, the medical centre includes the Mailman School of Public Health and the College of Dental Medicine.
