Construction work is expected to be complete in 30 months.
Vinci Construction Grands Projets in a joint venture with EMCC and Jan de Nul has secured a $147M contract to extend the port of Kingston in Jamaica.Under the contract, awarded by shipping group CMA CGM, the JV will be responsible for the refurbishment, reinforcement and upgrade of 1,200m of quays to seismic standards.Furthermore, dredging work in the access channel will be carried out. The project is expected to increase the alongside depth of the quays to enable them to handle container ships of larger capacity. According to Vinci, the port of Kingston — located near the Panama Canal at the crossroads between the North/South and East/West sea lanes — will become one of the three main container terminals in the Caribbean.Work on the project will be completed in 25 months.
US-based engineering services provider Fluor has won a $501M contract from Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée (CBG) for a bauxite production expansion project in Kamsar, Guinea.Under the contract, Fluor will provide engineering, procurement and construction management services for the project.The scope of the project includes the expansion of bauxite production from 14.5M to 18.5M t annually. It will also involve the expansion of the mine infrastructure, rail system, port facility and processing plant. The project represents the company’s first of a planned three-phase expansion. Fluor has been involved in the project since its early stages executing the feasibility study and early engineering.Rick Koumouris, president of Fluor’s mining & metals business, said: “Fluor has worked with CBG to develop a capital-efficient solution that combines delivery predictability and flexibility for maintenance and future expansions.“Given the project’s location and unique logistical challenges, Fluor will bring unmatched technical and execution expertise, as well as the requisite Guinea experience, to deliver this project safely, on schedule and on budget.”The expansion project is expected to be completed in 2018.
Royal Caribbean Cruises has signed an agreement with Miami-Dade County to build and operate a new cruise terminal at PortMiami, Florida.The new terminal will support PortMiami and will serve as homeport to Royal Caribbean International ships, including a 5,400-passenger Oasis-class ship — the world’s largest cruise ships.The 16,000sq m terminal, designed by Broadway Malyan, is nicknamed the ‘Crown of Miami’ due to its distinctive shape and will be built on land leased from the county. The company will also add a 2,000sq m Innovation Lab to its corporate PortMiami’s headquarters.Miami-Dade County mayor Carlos Gimenez said: “Miami-Dade County is happy to welcome Royal Caribbean’s expansion at PortMiami, and all the economic benefits that come along with it.“This public-private partnership will have an estimated economic impact of $500M and generate approximately 4,000 jobs. “Royal Caribbean has been an important part of our world-class community for almost 50 years, and this expansion will once again make PortMiami Royal Caribbean’s largest cruise port in the world. I thank them for their continued investment in and commitment to Miami-Dade.”The agreement will come before the Miami-Dade County board of county commissioners on 6 July 2016.

Dutch port operator APM Terminals is set to develop a new trans-shipment terminal at the Tanger Med 2 port complex in the Moroccan city of Tangier.Estimated to cost €758m, APM Terminals MedPort Tangier will have annual capacity of 5m TEUs, increasing the port's total annual throughput capacity to over 9m TEUs. It will feature the latest technology and have up to 2,000m of quay length, along with the technology pioneered at the APM Terminals Maasvlakte II Rotterdam terminal. APM Terminals already operates the APM Terminals Tangier facility at Tanger Med 1 port. The 30-year concession of APM Terminals MedPort Tangier at Tanger Med 2 port will complement the current operations of the existing APM Terminals Tangier facility.The new terminal is scheduled to commence operations in 2019.APM Terminals CEO Kim Fejfer said: "Terminals MedPort Tangier will bring important innovation and future capacity into the West Med market on one of the world's most strategic seaways - the Strait of Gibraltar."
A Bouygues-led consortium has won a design-build contract from the Dover Strait Ports Company (Société des Ports du Détroit) for the Port of Calais extension project in France.Apart from Bouygues Travaux Publics, the consortium includes Colas Nord-Picardie, Spie Batignolles and Jan De Nul.The contract is valued at about €675m, with Bouygues Construction having a share of about €300m. The project will involve the construction of a new 3km seawall, a new 100-hectare harbour basin to the north of the existing facilities, three new ferry berths and a roll-on/roll-off berth inside the harbour basin.Work will also include 4m cubic metres of marine dredging for the new quays, development of new cross-Channel traffic reception capacities such as 44 hectares of parking facilities and roads and around twenty operational and reception buildings. Bouygues Travaux Publics CEO Philippe Amequin said: "We are very pleased to have the opportunity to play a part in the economic development of Nord - Pas de Calais - Picardie region with this project, which will provide it with a port infrastructure corresponding to its ambitions, both in terms of functionality and of quality of service."Our teams have been at work since the contract was signed, and they are already at the site carrying out the engineering studies that will result in the construction of a state-of-the-art port."
A consortium of Enel Green Power (EGP), Moroccan energy firm Nareva Holding (Nareva) and Siemens Wind Power has been pre-awarded a contract to design, construct, develop, finance, operate and maintain five wind projects in Morocco.The wind projects, awarded by Moroccan utility ONEE, will have a total capacity of 850MW. Construction on the projects is estimated to entail a total investment of about €1bn, which will be mostly financed through project finance facilities.Three wind farms, including the 150MW Midelt, 100MW Tanger, and 200MW Jbel Lahdid will be built in northern Morocco. The remaining two facilities, the 300MW Tiskrad and the 100MW Boujdour, will be constructed in southern Morocco.EGP and Nareva will set up and own five special purpose vehicles holding the projects. Siemens Wind Power will offer the wind turbines, with several components manufactured locally.The wind farms are expected to be completed and become operational between 2017 and 2020. Energy produced by the facilities will be sold to ONEE under 20-year power purchase deals. EGP CEO Francesco Venturini said: “We are leveraging on our knowledge and expertise, in collaboration with our partners, to contribute to Morocco’s ambitious energy plan that has renewables at its core. “The country is an example in North Africa of reliability and transparency in supporting the development of renewable technologies.”
