Nine construction companies have been chosen for the £500M Cambridge University framework scheme. The scheme — part of the university’s £600M capital building project — will include the construction of laboratories, academic spaces, catering, accommodation and sports facilities. The framework is broken down into three value bands: the first being for projects up to £5M, the second for works between £5M–£30M, and the third for projects valued at more than £30M.Balfour Beatty, BAM Construct, Bouygues, Kier and Laing O’Rourke have been selected for projects worth more than £30M. Kier, RG Carter and SDC have been chosen for the second band of projects, and SDC, RG Carter, Quinn, Kier and Conamar will deliver projects up to £5M.Paul Sheffield, managing director of Laing O’Rourke’s Engineering Enterprise, said: “It is great to be able to extend our deep and long-standing relationship with the University of Cambridge. There is a wide range of projects available through the framework and we are excited to be given the opportunity to put our expertise to good use and meet the needs of such a prestigious institution.”The framework will last for two years, with the possibility of a three-year extension.
Construction firm BAM has been awarded a €90M ($101.4M) contract by Dutch rail network operator ProRail to revamp the Driebergen-Zeist station area in the Netherlands. The project will involve the construction of an underpass under the tracks and the adjustment of the local road network. BAM will refurbish the rail infrastructure by building two additional tracks. It will also construct a new bus station and underground bicycle parking. The new bus station is targeted to be energy neutral by implementing energy-efficient systems and the installation of solar panels on the platform roofs.Construction work will begin in early 2017.
London’s Gatwick Airport has chosen 17 construction and engineering companies for the next stage of its £2.5bn transformation. The appointment follows the visit of the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to the airport to support a second runway. The next stage of its transformation include building, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering works for low-complexity projects up to £1.5M and for medium-complexity projects between £1M-£10M.Gatwick’s development director Raymond Melee said: “These contractors will help to deliver the next phase of Gatwick’s transformation, which has already seen £1.3bn of investment since independent ownership in 2009.“Gatwick is growing fast with more than 41M passengers a year now travelling through the world’s busiest single-runway airport — a decade ahead of industry predictions. The £44M Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC) will be opened on June 7 by Her Majesty the Queen.The centre, built by construction company BAM, will be home to a combination of neuroimaging equipment unique in Europe, including Europe’s most powerful brain scanner, the Siemens 3 Tesla Connectom MRI System, and a specially adapted MRI scanner of which there is only one other in the world, at Harvard University.Professor Derek Jones, director of CUBRIC, said: “This is the culmination of a huge amount of hard work by many people over several years and I would like to thank everyone who played their part in creating this remarkable facility.“The combination of the very best staff in their field and some of the most powerful scanners in the world has the potential for breakthroughs that could make a real difference to people’s lives around the world. “It will be a very special day for us all and a real honour to share it with Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.”CUBRIC, set to support innovation in world-class brain imaging research, will be four times larger than the University’s existing brain research facility.
Royal Bam Group subsidiary Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau has secured a contract for the construction of a €220m subway tunnel in Frankfurt. The 2km double-track tunnel will be built in the city centre, in the new Gateway Gardens district.The cut and cover tunnel will be about 11m wide and 6m high. Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau will move approximately 900,000 sq m of land and will process 180,000 sq m of concrete.Gateway Gardens is a new development situated close to Frankfurt Airport and houses offices, service areas, hotels, conference and exhibition spaces,, and restaurant and retail facilities.The Gateway Gardens Tunnel is expected to be operational at the end of 2019.
Graham-BAM Healthcare Partnership, a joint venture between Graham Construction and BAM International, has been selected by South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust to build Ulster Hospital’s new £95m Acute Services Block in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
BAM Deutschland, in a joint venture with Max Bögl Stiftung & Co. KG, has secured a new contract for the construction of a hospital in Frankfurt Höchst, Germany.The contract value for BAM Deutschland, the German operating company of Royal BAM Group, is over €150m.The project has been designed by Wörner Traxler Richter Architekten in Frankfurt. The six-floor hospital building will have total floor area of 79,000 sq m.It will feature 664 beds, ten operating rooms and a 'hybrid operating room', which will have specialist equipment including a CT and MRI scan. The facility will cater to 33,500 patients each year.Construction of the hospital is expected to be completed by early 2019.
A joint venture between Skanska and BAM Nuttall has secured a contract from Network Rail to build the new Ordsall Chord project in Manchester, UK.The project will connect Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly for the first time, helping to deliver faster and more frequent train service. It forms part of the Northern Hub project to enhance railway services across northern England.The contract runs from 2016 to 2019. Skanska’s share in the contract will be more than £74m, which will be included in order bookings for Skanska UK in the first quarter of 2016.BAM Nuttall sector director Alan Cox said: “This alliance continues a long association we have had with the railway in the North West and we are delighted to be creating such an important new link with an iconic structure that will enrich the railway heritage and passenger experience in the whole region.”Skanska managing director James Richardson said: “This is a significant part of Network Rail’s plan to stimulate economic growth in the north of England and Skanska is delighted to be part of the alliance delivery team helping to achieve this goal.”
Developer Ballymore has received funding from British property investor M&G Real Estate for the construction of the £200m Three Snowhill development in Birmingham, UK.The office development, which will cover an area of 420,000 sq ft, is due to be the largest ever speculative city centre office project built outside London.The property will feature 385,000 sq ft of office space, 35,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, accommodating nearly 4,000 workers.BAM Construction was appointed as preferred contractor for the project in June 2015. The project is expected to be completed at the end of 2018.Ballymore CEO Sean Mulryan said: “Ballymore is delighted to announce a start on the third and final phase of our Snowhill scheme. “Working with the city, our funding partner, M&G Real Estate, and our main contractor, BAM, we will deliver a landmark building and the final element of what is one of the largest and most prestigious commercial developments in central Birmingham.”
