Skanska USA has been awarded a $399M design-build contract by the Florida Department of Transportation for the construction of the Pensacola Bay Bridge in Florida, US.The contract will include the replacement of the existing bridge over Pensacola Bay with two new three-lane bridges, connecting the cities of Pensacola and Gulf Breeze.Each new bridge will have a length of about 5km. The total project length is about 6km, including the roadway approaches on each end of the bridges.Work on the project is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2016 and is set to be complete in August 2020.
US-based PCL Construction Services has been selected for the construction of the first phase of the Airside Terminal at Orlando International Airport’s South Terminal C.The scope of the project — part of the $1.8bn south terminal development — will include the construction of 16 airline gates and all associated improvements and infrastructure. The flexible gate configuration will be able to accommodate narrow body, jumbo, and super jumbo aircrafts. The development will also include site work, roadways, aprons, taxiways, landscaping, lighting, walkways, aircraft loading bridges, concessions, and security improvements.Rick Goldman, PCL Orlando district manager, said: “We are thrilled to play a leading role in bringing together local and diverse businesses in the construction of Orlando International Airport’s new terminal.“As part of the nation’s 9th busiest airport for passenger travel, this project will provide a seamless departure and arrival experience for millions of travellers each year.”Preconstruction on the new airside terminal will start in August 2016 and construction work will commence in the first quarter of 2017. The project is scheduled for completion in October 2019.PCL is also working on the Main Ticket Lobby Modifications project, which is expected to be complete in December 2017.
The University of Central Florida (UCF) has selected a team to design and construct its new $60M campus in downtown Orlando, Florida.The team — composed by SchenkelShultz Architecture, Robert A.M. Stern Architects and Skanska USA Building — will be responsible for the 15,000sq m academic building, which will be the centrepiece of the new campus.The partnership will also support the renovation of UCF’s existing Center for Emerging Media, which is home to several academic programs.SchenkelShultz Architecture’s president and chief operating officer J. Thomas Chandler said: “Our team is excited to create an innovative campus in downtown Orlando that transforms the urban city center and embraces the neighboring Parramore community.“We are ready to work as a partner to UCF and the academic and business leaders of our community to create a timeless, 21st-century academic environment.”
Royal Caribbean Cruises has signed an agreement with Miami-Dade County to build and operate a new cruise terminal at PortMiami, Florida.The new terminal will support PortMiami and will serve as homeport to Royal Caribbean International ships, including a 5,400-passenger Oasis-class ship — the world’s largest cruise ships.The 16,000sq m terminal, designed by Broadway Malyan, is nicknamed the ‘Crown of Miami’ due to its distinctive shape and will be built on land leased from the county. The company will also add a 2,000sq m Innovation Lab to its corporate PortMiami’s headquarters.Miami-Dade County mayor Carlos Gimenez said: “Miami-Dade County is happy to welcome Royal Caribbean’s expansion at PortMiami, and all the economic benefits that come along with it.“This public-private partnership will have an estimated economic impact of $500M and generate approximately 4,000 jobs. “Royal Caribbean has been an important part of our world-class community for almost 50 years, and this expansion will once again make PortMiami Royal Caribbean’s largest cruise port in the world. I thank them for their continued investment in and commitment to Miami-Dade.”The agreement will come before the Miami-Dade County board of county commissioners on 6 July 2016.
Skanska in a joint venture with Gates Construction has secured a $200M contract from Lee Memorial Health System to expand and refurbish the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, Florida.The project will include the creation of 34,000sq m of new space and about 4,500sq m of renovations. It will also involve three additional floors, as well as many horizontal expansions. Furthermore, the development will include a parking facility which will be able to accommodate 1,300 vehicles.Work on the project will commence in June 2016 and is set to be completed in February 2021.
United Technologies has started construction on a new $115M technology centre in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.The new UTC Center for Intelligent Buildings will serve as the global corporate headquarters for UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies.The 21,000sq m facility will feature the latest United Technologies products, along with integrated systems and interactive displays from brands such as Carrier, Otis, Automated Logic, Chubb, Edwards, Kidde and Lenel.In addition, the building will also serve as a high-tech, modern workspace for UTC employees and members of the Otis Americas regional headquarters team.UTC Climate, Controls & Security president Bob McDonough said: "Today, we move one step closer to delivering a first-of-its-kind destination for both the global building community and our neighbours right here in Palm Beach County."This center will serve as a living showcase, demonstrating the latest building technology and pioneering new concepts that will help our customers meet their needs efficiently, sustainably and intelligently."
Florida’s Department of Transportation has broken ground on the second phase of the SunRail system in Florida. The $187m project is the first extension of the commuter rail system, which opened on May 1, 2014 and currently serves 12 stations between DeBary, in Volusia County, and Sand Lake Road, south of Orlando’s city. The expansion project, awarded to Middlesex-Herzog joint venture, is a 17,2-mile extension of the existing SunRail service and will include four new stations at Meadow Woods, the Tupperware Station, the Kissimmee Station adjacent to the current Amtrak station and the Poinciana station. Other features of the project include grade crossing improvements, the construction of vehicle storage and layover facilities at the Poinciana station, the installation of a second track and an upgraded signal system. The construction work is expected to be completed in about two years, opening to passengers in 2018.
Mayo Clinic is set to invest $100m in major construction projects at its Florida campus in 2016.Mayo Clinic will start constructing a destination medical building in mid-2016. The facility will provide integrated services needed for complex cancer, as well as neurologic and neurosurgical care.Initially, the building will have four floors, covering an area of 150,000 sq ft, with the potential for 11 more levels. Two floors will be devoted exclusively to haematology and oncology care, one floor for neurology and neurosurgery, a chemotherapy area, and spaces for training residents and fellows.Once opened, the building is expected to serve more than 126,000 patients in the first year alone. The staff strength of the haematology and oncology department will increase by 50%. The project will also enable the hiring of 12 new neurologists and neurosurgeons.Mayo Clinic has said that another construction project slated to commence this year on its Florida campus is a positron emission tomography (PET) radiochemistry facility.
Metal Container Corporation (MCC), a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch, has started construction on a $175m aluminium bottle line at its facility in Jacksonville, Florida.The new move is part of the company’s strategy to improve production of the Budweiser and Bud Light aluminium bottles.Anheuser-Busch has been producing aluminium bottles since 2013. Jacksonville will be the second MCC facility to produce them. Anheuser-Busch has also operated a brewery in Jacksonville since 1969. The project is expected to create about 75 new jobs at the facility.MCC president Dave Taylor said: “Since it launched in early 2014, the aluminium bottle has become overwhelmingly popular with beer drinkers, and we are proud to break ground on a new line in Jacksonville that will further expand production of the popular bottles, while adding jobs.“The innovative, high-demand aluminium bottles will be enjoyed by fans as the 2016 baseball season and the busy spring and summer beer-selling seasons begin.”
