Finnish construction company YIT has been selected by Ilmarinen Mutual Pension Insurance for the renovation and expansion of its property located at Mikonkatu 7 in the centre of Helsinki.

Both parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the contract, which includes the complete renovation of the building. Scheduled to begin this November, the construction is expected to be completed by October 2021.

With nearly 6,000m² of leasable office premises, the ground and basement floors will have 2,000m² of business premises.

The renovation project will add an adaptable head office level premises and new business premises for the insurance company.

The six-storey building on the corner of Mikonkatu and Yliopistonkatu will be renovated into a modern office building by demolishing and replacing a large part of the old indoor structures, including all partition walls and some lifts and stairwells.

Roofs will be replaced and a new four-storey atrium will be built in the courtyard. The street-side corner will also be renovated and used to make a new entrance to the offices. The first floor will have new business premises and their facades will also be renovated.

Waste management facilities will be located in the basement of the property and will be shared by three different properties. Thus, the facilities must be available throughout the renovation.

The central location requires that the project must be implemented without disturbing surrounding operators, including adjacent hotel and passing traffic.

YIT business premises renovation vice president Kalevi Stenman said: “At construction sites such as Mikonkatu 7, especially logistics must follow a very precise timetable.”

Ilmarinen construction manager Hannu Keinänen said: “Our experiences of previous projects with YIT have proven that they have the necessary competence for demanding renovation projects.”

Earlier in August 2019, YIT signed an agreement with the City of Helsinki for the renovation of residential buildings in Pohjolankatu 47 and Käpyläntie 12 streets. Valued at €27m, the project includes six 3-4-floor residential houses built in 1950 and 1952 with a total of 211 apartments and total area of about 17,500m².
