Finnish construction company YIT has been selected by Savo Consortium for Education (Sakky) to develop new premises in Kuopio’s Savilahti district, Finland.
The project will be implemented as a cooperative project management contract and the development phase will commence at the beginning of 2019. Construction will begin later in 2019 and be completed in 2023.
The total value of the project is approximately €60m. The implementation phase contract is expected to be signed in October 2019.
Sakky intends to centralise its operations in Kuopio at a single location and ensure modern learning environments for thousands of students for decades to come.
The premises will comprise 26,000m² spread out over three connected buildings and include teaching and office facilities as well as a restaurant world complete with a teaching kitchen.
Nordic Swan Ecolabel certification will be sought for the building, and will meet the Healthy Building criteria of the Finnish Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate.
So far, YIT has constructed six schools in Kuopio using the life-cycle model – the Karttula, Jynkä, Martti Ahtisaari, Päiväranta, Rajala and Pohjantie schools, and the seventh, Hiltula school, will be completed in 2019.
Sakky is a regional multidisciplinary provider of education services and a developer of working life.
Earlier in December 2018, YIT and the Lapland Hospital District joint municipal authority signed an agreement on the development stage of the Lapland Central Hospital expansion project.
The expansion project will be implemented under the alliance model and its total value is estimated at €66m.
The development stage commences in January 2019 and ends in September 2019, followed by the implementation stage, which is scheduled to be completed in September 2023.
The project will involve the construction of two new buildings in the same area as the existing hospital in Rovaniemi.
A new building, with a floor area of 22,700m², will house general hospital functions, and another building with 8,000m² will be a psychiatric hospital. YIT will also renovate 2,800m² in the current building.
The alliance includes Prodeco as the developer consultant, Verstas Architects and a special engineering group comprising Granlund, WSP Finland and L2 Fire Safety. Are is the building systems partner.
