US-based Alliant Energy has broken ground on a $700M natural gas-fuelled generating facility in Beloit, Wisconsin.

The 700MW facility will have an integrated 2MW solar field and will be able to power over 535,000 homes.

Alliant Energy chairman, president and CEO Patricia Kampling said: "Today marks a major step forward in our mission to provide cost-effective, reliable energy for decades to come.

"This highly efficient facility will modernize our generating operations and advance our transition to cleaner energy sources."

The project is expected to create more than 1,000 construction jobs and be complete by early 2020.
