Weitz Company, which is serving as Broward County’s owner representative in Florida, US, has announced the start of early construction work on the $900m (£720.9m) Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale.

Matthews Southwest is the developer of the project, which involves the addition of more than 525,000ft² of meeting space to the convention centre and an 800-room, four-diamond Omni Hotel on the property.

Weitz Company will oversee and collaborate with the design-build construction team for the project, which will be designed to meet LEED Gold standards.

Scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2023, the expanded convention centre will have more than 1.2 million ft² of event space which includes 350,000ft² of contiguous exhibition space, as well as a new 65,000ft² waterfront ballroom.

Additional features of the project include the latest in new technology, new dining concepts, enhanced water taxi access and an iconic waterfront plaza with public access.

The hotel will feature more than 73,000ft² of meeting space, 11,000ft² spa and fitness centre, expanded entertainment, retail and dining spaces.

Balfour Beatty is the general contractor for the project, while Stantec is the lead design architect, Fentress is the convention centre expansion architect, and Nunzio Marc DeSantis serves as a hotel architect.

Weitz said: “With enabling projects currently underway (demolition of the Portside Center and site preparations), we will remain engaged in workflow planning and build strategies that will support an efficient construction process.”

Following the completion of the current demolition and site work in March 2020, construction will commence on the expanded portions of the convention centre and the hotel.

Earlier this month, Weitz said it has completed the construction of Radiant, a multi-family residential high-rise in downtown Denver, US.

Located at the entrance of Welton corridor between 21st Street and 22nd Street, Radiant features 9,000ft² amenity deck with a pool and hot tub on the fifth floor; a fitness centre and a patio on the sixth floor; and panoramic rooftop social lounge on the 17th floor.
