UK-based Wates Construction has secured three contracts worth more than £130M from Select Property Group to build three student accommodation projects in the UK.

The scope of the contracts will include the construction of three Vita Student schemes in Manchester, Newcastle and York.

Under a £60.2M contract, Wates will construct 748 Vita Student beds at the former BBC site on Oxford Road, Manchester.

The second contract, worth £47.7M, will involve the construction of 659 beds in 15 three- and four-storey buildings within a 6.3-acre site. It will also include the refurbishment of a former convent building and landscaped grounds.

Additionally, Wates will be responsible for the construction of a 10-storey building comprising 331 beds at Strawberry Place near St James’ Park in Newcastle.

Wates Construction managing director for Midlands and North Phil Harrison said: “The buoyancy of the private residential market in the north is in part being driven by an increased appetite for premium student accommodation, a demand that Select Property Group is leading the way in addressing.

“Wates’ appointment to the three Vita schemes across the North is a huge testament to our growing relationship with Select Property Group, the strength of which has been built on our comprehensive understanding of their vision to create unique residences that enhance student experience.”

The projects are scheduled to be complete in September 2017.
