UK-based construction company Wates Construction has been selected by Liverpool City Council to build a 200-bed cruise terminal hotel as part of the city’s major waterfront regeneration project.

The four-star hotel is expected to support the city’s new cruise liner terminal at Princes Dock, which will accommodate the world’s largest ships.

The hotel will comprise a lobby bar, cafe, restaurant, business suite and back of house facilities, along with visitor and coach parking, and a taxi pick-up and drop-off point.

Subject to planning approval, construction is scheduled to start in early 2020. The project is expected to provide training and employment opportunities for local people.

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said: “Liverpool should be the premier cruise destination on the west coast of the UK and our new terminal will underpin that ambition and make it a reality.

“This hotel is critical to the plan to create a world-class experience for the cruise companies and their passengers.

“The city is working with some of the very best in the construction industry to deliver the facilities and I’m delighted they’ve got the green light to start this hugely important scheme.”

Liverpool City Council is working with Peel Land & Property for a £5bn regeneration of the Liverpool Waters development site.

The project is supported by £20m from the Local Growth Fund, which is awarded to the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and invested through the Strategic Investment Fund of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

The Wates’ design team comprises Brock Carmichael as architects, Curtins as civil and structural engineers, Ramboll as mechanical and electrical engineers and Planit as landscape architects.

The City Council procured construction of the new hotel via Major Works UK, part of Scape’s National Construction framework.

Earlier in 2019, Wates secured approval from the Cardiff Council planning committee for the construction of the first pilot modular homes under the council’s house-building programme.
