British construction, property services and development company Wates Group has commenced construction of homes on Lowfield Green in York.

The City of York Council said that the project, which will see 140 homes being built, is the first of eight sites included in the city’s biggest house-building programme since the 1970s.

The landscaped site is expected to have more than an acre of open, public space for the residents. Around it, starter and family homes, wheelchair-accessible bungalows and apartments for over-55s will be built.

The council said that 40% of the homes will be affordable, which is over twice the minimum planning requirement.

Out of the remaining 50%, half will be council housing and the other half will be for shared ownership.

The site will also include six self-build plots with services provided and a community build by YorSpace providing 19 households the chance to have their own home.

City of York Council housing and safer neighbourhoods executive member Councillor Denise Craghill said: “We are committed to building high-quality homes at Lowfield Green and are delighted that we have secured Wates to build them. Their reputation for well-built homes matches our ambition as does their commitment to sustainable construction.”

Wates Construction North East and Yorkshire business unit director David Wingfield said: “Our growing portfolio in York is a testament to our reputation as a trusted and expert contractor across a diverse range of sectors and to our close network of supply chain partners in the city and the wider North Yorkshire.

“Our team has worked closely with City of York Council to scope the Lowfield Green construction programme and ensure that this important new development is delivered efficiently and to an uncompromised standard for the people of York.”

Wates has committed to providing employment and training opportunities for local people, including work placements, apprenticeships and traineeships, along with career guidance for local students, throughout the construction period.

Earlier in October 2019, Wates secured approval for its £1bn housing regeneration scheme in London. The joint venture partners, Havering Council and Wates Residential, submitted plans for the Napier and New Plymouth House site in Rainham in May.

The site is one of the 12 included in the ‘12 Estates’ regeneration programme, which will see nearly 5,200 homes delivered in Havering over the next 12 to 15 years.
