The University of Rochester has unveiled plans to build a $240m Orthopaedics & Physical Performance Center in the US.

To be built alongside The Marketplace Mall, New York, the 330,000ft² project will be an orthopaedic surgery centre for patients with bone and joint conditions.

The University of Rochester said that the new facility will be a multi-storey tower above the surgery centre and will include ambulatory surgery operating rooms, procedure rooms, clinical exam rooms for outpatient visits, Center for Human Athleticism and Musculoskeletal Performance and Prevention (CHAMPP).

CHAMPP is a centre for proactive health care that includes Sports Medicine clinical teams, athletic performance training, physical therapy and rehabilitation, nutrition, as well as behavioural health.

The UR Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance Center will also include a physical therapy, occupational therapy, hand therapy, rehabilitation, and a diagnostic imaging suite dedicated to orthopaedics equipped with X-ray devices, MRI machines, computed tomography and an EOS device.

The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) aims to create an expansive orthopaedics centre that would combine ambulatory surgery and other essential orthopaedic services in one convenient spot.

Subject to approvals from the University of Rochester Board of Trustees, New York State Department of Health and Town of Henrietta, the project is expected to be completed by 2023.

Furthermore, the Board of Trustees has approved $11m for the project design.

The project is being taken up to meet the increase in demand for orthopaedic care and the need for additional capacity as patients of all ages in the region experience more orthopaedic issues.

URMC managing director and CEO Mark Taubman said: “We’ve seen a 25 percent increase in orthopaedic surgery cases over the past seven years, and a 60 percent increase in ambulatory visits in the same period of time.

“We expanded our team of providers and opened additional clinics around Rochester as volumes increased, but our surgical and outpatient spaces are now at capacity.”
