Unite Students has received planning permission for two city centre developments in Birmingham and Sheffield.

The projects will together create a total of 1,186 student bedrooms.

The development at International House in Birmingham will be built alongside Unite Students’ existing development ‘The Heights’.

The project in Sheffield will include the renovation of the St Vincent’s Church, located next to the University of Sheffield’s main city centre campus, and its grounds into a new common room and 600-bed units .

Unite Group property director Richard Simpson said: “We are delighted to have secured planning consent for these important sites in two of the UK’s most popular University cities. These cluster led developments will help to meet the strong demand for student accommodation in these cities and provide a safe and secure home for students.”

The two projects are estimated to cost £75M — to be financed through internally generated sources — and are expected to open for the 2018/19 academic year.
