UK-based professional services firm Turner & Townsend has been selected to provide cost management advisory services for the City Rail Link project in Auckland, New Zealand.

Said to be the largest transport infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in New Zealand, the City Rail Link is estimated to cost more than NZ$4.4bn (£2.2bn).

Turner & Townsend New Zealand regional director Ross Dunkerley said: “Upon its completion in 2024, City Rail Link will double Auckland’s rail capacity and improve travel times for the entire transport network.

"It represents a significant enhancement and modernisation of the city’s urban framework. We are very proud to play our part in City Rail Link which will enrich the lives of so many in Auckland.

“The City Rail Link project represents an exciting opportunity for us as our Auckland office continues to grow. We will be applying both local and international best practice expertise to ensure it is a legacy project for New Zealand.”

The project involves redevelopment of an existing heritage station, and construction of a 3.5km long double-track rail tunnel underneath Auckland's city centre, between Britomart Transport Centre and Mount Eden Railway Station.

Britomart is expected to be converted from a terminus station into a through station and Mount Eden Station is expected to be rebuilt completely, with four platforms to serve as interchange between the new CRL line and the existing Western Line.

Expected to be completed in 2024, the project is capable of providing the capacity to manage 54,000 passengers an hour.

Turner & Townsend said in a statement: "Major benefits of the City Rail Link will be significantly improved customer service levels by better matching public transport demand and supply; expansion of the economic potential of Auckland, driving productivity increases by enhancing access to jobs, and providing access to special housing areas making affordable housing in outer areas more viable through effective transport access to the city."

Recently, the Auckland Council Governing Body has approved an additional funding of NZ$500m (£256m) for the City Rail Link project.
