Van Don International Airport, the first international airport in Vietnam, has been opened in Quang Ninh province, which is home to the UNESCO World Heritage site Halong Bay, 220km from the capital Hanoi.

This is the first international airport in Vietnam to be developed by Sun Group, a private company involved in the development of tourism, leisure and entertainment-focused properties and projects.

The VND7.463bn ($310m) airport has been constructed with the assistance of airport consultancy and engineering firm NACO (Netherlands Airport Consultants).

NACO project manager and architect Romy Berntsen said: “It is the most modern airport in Vietnam. It will have positive influences on the passengers’ experience here in the airport.”

Besides being equipped with latest airport technologies in the main terminal and a modern runway, the airport features a design inspired by the Halong Bay, which is located 50km away.

A new gateway for domestic and international travellers coming to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Halong Bay, the airport is expected to receive 2.5 million passengers annually for the next two years and five million per year by 2030.

The Sun Group has also unveiled two more major infrastructures projects in Quang Ninh – the new Halong-Van Don Highway and Halong International Cruise Port.

The four-lane, 60km highway is expected to reduce travel time from Van Don Airport to Halong city to under 50 minutes.

The VND1,032bn ($43m) Halong International Cruise Port is the first cruise port dedicated to receiving international cruise ships.

Located in Bai Chay ward, Halong City, the port can accommodate two cruise ships (up to 225,000GRT each) at the same time and a total of 8,460 passengers, including crew.

Architects Bill Bensley has designed the port terminal, which is expected to be a new landmark for the city and Quang Ninh Province.

The opening of the three infrastructure projects is expected to play a key role in tapping the full tourism potential of the province and create new opportunities for international trade and economic cooperation.
