Australia-based developer Steller has unveiled its vision for the $80m redevelopment of the Continental Hotel in Sorrento, Australia.
Under the plans, the 143-year-old icon, located 75 minutes from Melbourne, will be redeveloped as a luxury accommodation, a wellness centre, recreation, entertainment and dining destination, and premium wedding and event facilities.
The redeveloped Continental Hotel is expected to bring a new sense of style to the Mornington Peninsula, with a spirit that celebrates continental Europe and the Australian coastline.
As part of the major redevelopment programme, the heritage building will be restored to its former glory, as a hospitality and events establishment.
Three new proposed interconnecting buildings will be added, which will include premium hotel rooms and a wellness centre, including a day spa and gym.
The project, as the largest and most significant tourism investment into Sorrento, is expected to generate major economic, social and cultural benefits for the local region and create up to 200 casual and full-time positions.
The project will be delivered in two stages. Under Stage One, the public bar and bistro, fine-dining restaurant and champagne bar will be launched. Construction on Stage One has already commenced, and the venues are due to open in September 2019.
Under the proposed plan for Stage Two, a modern hotel, a wellness centre, contemporary café and wine bar, day spa and gym will be constructed, in addition to the events and function components.
Subject to approvals, Stage Two is expected to be completed in 2020.
In November 2017, Steller entered into a joint venture partnership with restaurateur and pub owner Julian Gerner Julian to renew the Continental Hotel in Sorrento.
While announcing the partnership, the company said that construction is expected to commence in 2018 and a soft launch in the summer of 2018-19.
The company said that the Continental Hotel is expected to become a major social, hospitality, wellness and accommodation draw card for visitors to enjoy the coastal setting and sea views.
