The Star Entertainment Group has broken ground on a $293m (AUD400m),53-storey mixed-use hotel tower on Broadbeach Island on the Gold Coast in the state of Queensland, marking the entry of the Dorsett hotel brand into the Australian hospitality market.

Dorsett hotel at The Star Gold Coast will be the second biggest in the Broadbeach region after The Star Grand, offering 316 rooms.

The tower will deliver a third hotel for The Star Gold Coast, alongside The Star Grand and The Darling. Opened earlier in 2018, the Dorsett and The Darling are the first luxury hotels developed on the Gold Coast since 2011.

The tower will also offer 423 one and two-bedroom apartments, which will take the overall supply at The Star Gold Coast complex to almost 1,400 rooms.

New restaurant and bar concepts, a recreation deck with ocean views and a resort pool for hotel guests are also planned as part of the development.

The project is expected to create 2,300 jobs, with 1,800 during construction and 500 after it becomes operational and the Star Gold Coast’s workforce is expected to increase by 21% from 2,400 to 2,900 employees.

The hotel and apartment tower will be developed by the Destination Gold Coast Consortium, a joint venture between The Star Entertainment Group and Hong Kong-based partners Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and Far East Consortium.

Dorsett owns and operates hotels in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and the UK.

Hutchinson Builders of Australia has been selected as the preferred contractor for the tower development.

The tower’s lower levels will accommodate the 316 hotel rooms, while the upper levels will accommodate the 423 residential apartments ranging from 54m² to 109m².

Architects Cottee Parker, along with DBI Design, has designed the tower.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and The Star Entertainment Group chairman John O’Neill participated in the ground-breaking ceremony for the star Dorsett hotel and apartment tower.
