Canadian engineering group SNC-Lavalin has been awarded a contract to provide track upgrade works worth £1.5bn in Central England for UK's Network Rail.

Under the contract, SNC-Lavalin's subsidiary Atkins will support the delivery of upgrade work across London North West, London North East and East Midland routes for the next decade.

As part of the Central Rail Systems Alliance working alongside Balfour Beatty and TSO, Atkins will provide track, crossings, points, and associated overhead lines and signalling as part of the contract.

SNC-Lavalin interim president and CEO Ian Edwards said: “We have a long tradition of excellence in engineering and design in the global rail industry, and we are thrilled to be able to bring our expertise to such a valued client.

“It is with this kind of long-term consultancy work that SNC-Lavalin brings value-added outcomes for both the client and the end-users.”

The firm plans to commence work in August.

SNC-Lavalin engineering, design & project management Atkins president Philip Hoare said: “We look forward to working with Network Rail, Balfour Beatty and TSO to deliver critical track upgrades across the central region on what is the biggest upgrade to Britain’s railways in 150 years.

“Drawing on our collective rail experience and expertise, as well the latest digital solutions, we’re committed to designing a safe, efficient and reliable railway which is fit for the future.

Balfour Beatty has an 80% share in the decade-long alliance, while TSO and Atkins hold 10% each.

The contract marks the final 10-year contract, which is for five-year period and has option to extend for five additional years.

Earlier, Babcock Rail, Arup and Arcadis were selected as the preferred bidders for the Northern Alliance covering the Scotland route, while Colas Rail and AECOM were selected for the South Alliance. It includes Anglia, South East, Wessex, Western and Wales routes.

Recently, Atkins business was selected for Network Rails’ Signalling and Telecoms framework to deliver projects of varying value, including stand-alone level crossings, stand-alone major telecoms and related civil works.
